Wikipedia:Gothic interface discussion
We have to discuss what we want to do with the interface. This page is for core members to discuss what needs to happen. I 'm discussing the existence of this interface with an admin of wikitranslate, he gives the following reason for removal:
- Nobody has a gain from using it
He might be correct that very few people will use it. What's your opinion?
There are a few options:
- We keep it as it is now
- We remove the complete Gothic interface and replace it with English
- We remove the complete Gothic interface, the admin will work on a correct translation in the meantime ( and it will be available when about 25 percent is translated.)
Other option would be simply opening it up again, but corrections are too much of a big job.
I recommend that you give your opinion here, say if you're for or against removal of the Gothic interface and what you wish to happen under, once a final decision is taken, this discussion will be closed:
- My preferred option would be removing it completely as it is now, while I (as admin) re-do the translations. I don't mind if we close it until I 've about 25 percent or keep it open.

- Hey, by Interface you mean the menus and buttons? I fear, I don't have a firm opinion about that. Of course it is a chaos with the intermingling between Gothic in Gothic script, Latin script and English. I don't know what the helll the problem is with wikitranslate to not just open it again. It is not that it would cost them millions of dollars for the server activity. And espacially you are an ambitious editor here, and the current situation is a chaos which could be better solved by opening it and not saying: We close it because it is a chaos. Where would that be a solution to this? But as there were countless efforts already to get them to re-open the translation function, without success, that just won't happen. So, there must be another solution. What about the manual translation we did some time ago, where every string had to be translated on their own page? I don't remember how the structure was called, I guess they were the pages in another name room with that prefix. Is the Gothic interface even deletable? I must say I wouldn't be a fan of that. On the long sight a Gothic only in Gothic only script should be the goal, not an English interface, wikitranslate closed the translation function because latin script was used. What would they even say when we use an English only interface? Maybe they would even close the whole Wikipedia.
- The second option is unacceptable. This is "the Gothic Wikipedia", and so the interface should be able to be in Gothic; it would not truly be a Gothic project without it. Completely getting rid of it would also be to say that it is impossible to bring the language into the 21st century and thus also impossible to write about even non-technological things and ideas that came after the period of attestation. If the Old English Wikipedia is allowed to have an Old English interface supported by translatewiki.net, the Gothic Wikipedia should be allowed to have an interface in its proper language as well. If the Nahuatl Wikipedia is allowed to have what appears to be a Classical Nahuatl interface (which would be unintelligible to speakers of modern Nahuatl varieties) with such support, then the Gothic Wikipedia should be able to have a Gothic interface with such support as well.
- If the first option allows for the possibility for the export function or whatever it truly is to be reinitiated for Gothic, then that would be the best option, provided that all of the content is corrected and written in the Gothic alphabet (I believe that anything that cannot be corrected in a timely, satisfactory manner can just be "fuzzied" so that the message is not displayed in the interface, but I am not exactly sure if fuzzying a translation on translatewiki.net actually does that). If not, then the third option would the next best thing. Though, by no means should the current interface be kept as is in its current, frozen state. Not having a Gothic interface would be better than one that is riddled with obvious, atrocious errors that cannot be corrected with reasonable means.
- I believe that Old English is only enabled on translatewiki.net for certain projects; if it would appease the powers that be, I think that it should be suggested that the same be done for Gothic.
